Climbing Wall Award
Information
This
award enables holders to supervise people on climbing walls. To gain this award
you need more than just good personal climbing skills. The course covers
elements such as safe group management, and climbing etiquette, and you will
learn how to become an effective supervisor, encouraging others to enjoy their
climbing safely, whilst also improving some of your own climbing skills.
Courses run at MCC also include a module allowing candidates to supervise
abseiling.
Training Requirements:
- Minimum 17 years of age.
- Membership of a affiliated mountaineering club or a mountaineering
council.
- Registration with MLTE (you
will get your logbook from here).
- Have at least six months
experience of using a variety of climbing walls.
- Have a genuine interest in
climbing and the supervision of groups on climbing walls.
Training
The CWA training course is run over 2 days, and will include work at both MCC
and one other climbing wall. If you have an exceptionally high level of
experience you may apply for exemption from the training course- this should be
done through MLTE.
Assessment
Assessment will take place once you have undertaken a consolidation period,
during which you should build on your experience climbing and supervising in
climbing walls. Details can be found in your logbook. Assessment includes
personal climbing, group supervision and the use of climbing walls.
Assessment Requirements:
- Minimum 18 years of age prior
to attendance on an assessment course
- Have attended a training course
or been granted exemption from training and have a relevant training page
in their logbook
- Have recorded a minimum of
thirty visits between at least three different climbing walls
- Have a genuine interest in
climbing and the supervision of groups on climbing walls.
- Additionally have assisted a
qualified supervisor on at least fifteen instructed sessions on at least
two different walls including a large public facility in a variety of
contexts
- Hold a valid first aid
certificate
Climbing walls and purpose-built
artificial structures.
For the purposes of this scheme, a climbing wall is:

An artificial structure, designed for the purpose of
being used for climbing activities
(this includes towers, artificial boulders and mobile climbing walls)
·
Indoors or outdoors
·
A structure which has safety equipment such as top anchors
in place and is maintained through a management regime
·
Allows climbers to be lowered to the ground at all times |
